Just like normal desktop PC's, laptops need to stay cool to allow optimal performance. The thing is, most laptop models today have the air intake vents located beneath the machine. This poses a likelihood of overheating and a consequent drop in performance.
The posture of the individual operating the laptop computer is another major concern that necessitates a laptop stand. Improper postures have been known to cause back and neck problems. Experts also assert that the computer’s screen should be in line and positioned at an angle to the operator’s eyes preventing straining.
Thing You Will Need
When assembling a laptop stand, you will need the following implements;
1. A portable jig saw, or a hand saw: You need to do some bit of cutting when working with PVC pipes. Either of these saws should get the job done.
2. A square Cooling fan with the dimensions 115x115mm: This improves on the cooling of your laptop computer ensuring the performance stays in prime condition.
3. Electric wires and a socket plug: These provide an electric current to the cooling fan.
4. Electric tape to secure the wires in place.
5. A PVC pipe, 1.5 metres long and 21mm in diametre: This will form the frame of the laptop stand.
6. One tub of glue to hold the PVC pipe joints together.
7. 6 T-shape PVC joints.
8. Two 90-degree Elbow joints.
9. Two 45-degree Elbow joints.
How To Make A Laptop Stand: Step By Step
Measure and cut the PVC pipe according to your computer’s length. It is important to observe basic saftey guidelines in the case where a power jigsaw is being used.
Using four T shape joints, attach each to one end of the two straight PVC pipes and set them aside. You might want to apply some glue on the pipe ends prior to assembling them. This increases mechanical strength.
Attach a 90 degree joint to one of the straight PVC pipes with T shaped joints on both ends.
Mount two more T shape joints on the remaining PVC pipe with T shaped ends. Ensure that the joints are located on the inside of the PVC pile along its length and at a reasonable distance from each other.
Measure and cut the 45 degree joint as required. Attach onto the PVC pipe with four T shape joints attached; two of which form the feet of the laptop stand when complete. Assemble the 45 degree joints in such a way that the prodruding ends face upwards or opposite the direction the down-facing T shape joints are. The 45 degree joints will provide a surface on which your laptop computer’s screen can rest.
Measure and cut out two footings at an angle. Since the laptop stand is not going to lie flat on a surface, compensate for the angle of elevation by cutting the feet using a saw at an angle.
When done, mount the feet as an addition to the down facing T shape joints already mounted on the straight PVC pipe with four T shape joints; the feet included.
Having established how the joints fit, take them apart and apply glue on the surfaces that fit into each other. Re-assemble the whole stand once more and allow a little timefor the glue to dry.
Once the glue is dry, and the stand is firm and sturdy, get the electrical tape ready for the next phase. Mount the cooling fan at a position directly beneath where your computer’s cooling vents will sit.
Affix the wiring neatly on the frame of the laptop stand and connect the wires correctly onto the cooling fan.
Connect the plug to the cooling fan’s wires.
Plug in to a socket or reliable power source abd switch on the fan. Test whether the fan is performing as expected. Once satisfied, examine the whole set up for any errors and proceed to clean up the plastic debris and dust to avoid the risk of them getting sucked into your laptop computer and causing damage.
You can finally place your laptop computer onto the stand, log on and try out the set up.
